ABSTRACT: A simple and inexpensive procedure of soil identification is presented. This method cognizes the groups of the MCT geotechnical classification, which is developed especially for compacted tropical soils. The proposed procedure is based on measurements of: 1) the shrinkage of small discoid (20 mm diameter and 5 mm thick) moulded and dried specimens and 2) the consistency using a mini-penetrometer, after soaking of these dried specimens.
